TIP-6780 Latest Update: TRON Developer Community Releases SELFDESTRUCT Instruction Revision Explanation
BlockBeats News, November 19th. Recently, the TRON developers community released the latest explanation of "TIP-6780: Change to the SELFDESTRUCT Opcode" on Medium, and discussed the impact of the instruction change in a recent developer meeting. According to the plan, this change will be integrated into the upcoming java-tron v4.8.1 version, but will not take effect immediately upon release. Instead, the official activation time will be decided through on-chain governance voting after the completion of the network-wide upgrade.
According to the explanation, the core adjustment of TIP-6780 is to restrict the usage scenario of SELFDESTRUCT, allowing it to truly delete account data (such as code, storage, the account itself) only when called in the same transaction that created the contract. At the same time, the barrier to usage will be increased by adjusting the fixed energy cost from 0 to 5000 to reduce abuse risks. This change will align TRON's behavior with Ethereum's EIP-6780, further enhancing EVM compatibility.
In addition, the developers community conducted a statistical analysis of contracts on the current TRON network that include the SELFDESTRUCT opcode, showing that such contracts account for a very small percentage and hold fewer assets. Most internal transactions related to SELFDESTRUCT since 2025 have followed a "create-to-destroy" usage pattern, which will continue to function normally after the upgrade. Therefore, the expected impact on existing contracts and user assets is limited.
