Condor Building: A Serious Accident Raises Questions About Safety and Emergency Management in the Air Force

The serious accident that occurred this Thursday at the Condor Building, headquarters of the Argentine Air Force General Staff, has once again put the working safety conditions within one of the country's main military dependencies under scrutiny.

The fall of a freight elevator from the ninth floor, which left a non-commissioned officer with life-threatening injuries, has opened a chain of questions regarding the compliance with prevention protocols and the functioning of the internal emergency response mechanisms.

While maintenance work was being carried out on the two freight elevators used to transport large materials and equipment, one of the lifts collapsed for reasons that are still under investigation.

During the fall, a pulley from the lifting system is believed to have detached, a fundamental element for transmitting force and ensuring the safe movement of the cabin and counterweight.

According to available information, this component is said to have struck Auxiliary Officer Rodríguez, who was on duty and, according to various aviation sources, was also involved in the maintenance work of the equipment.

The military suffered severe injuries, with a reserved prognosis, and had to be urgently evacuated by a SAME ambulance.

The incident caused a loud noise that, according to testimonies gathered from Air Force personnel, shook the structure in the area near the elevator shaft, reflecting the magnitude of the accident and the potential risk to other people present in the building.

Doubts in Labor Safety Procedures and Emergency Resolution

The accident exposes a concerning succession of doubts that the Air Force leadership must address quickly and transparently.

The first concerns the compliance with safety procedures. Were the protocols established by the Accident Prevention, Hygiene, Safety at Work, and Environmental Directorate, an agency that is organically dependent on the Air Force Deputy Chief, led by Brigadier Marcelo Monetto, effectively applied? If those procedures existed and were followed, it is essential to understand how such a significant accident could occur.

Another question arises from the emergency health operation.

The transfer of the injured was carried out by a SAME ambulance, despite the fact that the Air Force has its own ambulance at the Retirement Assistance Center (CAR), located just a few meters from the Condor Building.

This decision raises questions about the immediate response capacity of military health resources and the real availability of the means that the institution claims to have to handle emergencies within its facilities.

Various sources maintain that personnel from the Air Force itself may have intervened in the maintenance work of the freight elevator.

If this circumstance is confirmed, it will be necessary to determine whether that intervention complied with the current regulations or whether, on the contrary, those tasks should have been carried out exclusively by specialized and certified companies to operate on this type of equipment.

The episode exceeds the nature of a work accident.

When a critical system fails in the main building of the Air Force and leaves a member fighting for their life, the problem ceases to be exclusively technical and becomes a matter of institutional responsibilities.

The leadership of the Air Force now faces a complex scenario, the obligation to provide public explanations and adopt concrete measures to ensure that an incident of this nature does not happen again.

Institutional silence or an investigation limited to mechanical causes would only deepen concerns about the safety culture within an organization that, due to the nature of its functions, should have as a fundamental principle the prevention of risk and the protection of its personnel.

The investigation must establish the material causes of the collapse, but also determine whether there were failures in maintenance planning, violations of safety regulations, deficiencies in supervision, or administrative decisions that increased the risk to personnel.
